Shekita James. My journey in nursing began more than 13 years ago. My passion to help and educate others drives me to continue advancing my career and practice.  I have advanced through many steppingstones in the nursing profession; LPN, ADN-RN, BSN-RN, MSN and am currently pursuing my DNP. I have practiced in many settings as nurse including MICU, Med-Surg, Urgent Care, Substance Abuse programs and Ambulatory Care. Although all settings have added value to my practice, my passion is health coaching and diabetes management. I receive the greatest joy partnering with patients to achieve their personal and clinical goals to become their best, healthy self. Patients should truly be at the center of managing their care. My patients know I am their biggest cheerleader and coach.

When not practicing as nurse, my 6- and 2-year-old and hubby keep me on my toes. I also enjoy spending quality time with family, crafting and doing home improvements. Being Nurse of the Year in Community Health is such an honor!  It is a highlight in my career and a reminder why I serve patients the way I do!

Laura P. Martinez, MSN, FNP-BC is a full-time Nurse Practitioner with Transition of Care at Northside Hospital Forsyth. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University and attended Simmons University where she received her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She is a member of the Honor Society in Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, as well as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She has worked in various areas of nursing for over 11 years at Northside Hospital. When not at work, she enjoys running, nature walks and spending time with family and friends.

Virginia W. Njoroge. I have been a Registered Nurse for 19 years with experience in Acute Care Nursing, mainly in Cardiac Medicine and Medical/Surgical, Long Term Care, and Palliative care. For the last 13 years, I have held various nursing leadership roles at Emory Decatur Hospital in Decatur, Georgia, including the Cardiac Telemetry Clinical Nurse Specialty, Unit Director for Cardiac Telemetry, and currently as a Specialty Director for Medical-Surgical Nursing Services.

I completed my Associate Science of Nursing at Georgia Perimeter in 2001, Bachelor of Nursing at Clayton State University in 2004, and Master of Science at Georgia State University in 2007. Outside of nursing, I enjoy traveling,  being outdoors, and nature, and spending time with family.
