Atlanta – The Georgia Nurses Association is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragedy that took place yesterday at a Northside Hospital in Midtown Atlanta. No one should experience such fear or the threat of violence anywhere, especially not in a place meant for receiving care, relief, healing, and comfort. We condemn this senseless act, and our hearts go out to the families and all those affected.
Two days ago, Governor Brian Kemp signed the Safer Hospitals Act, a top priority for GNA, into law which enhances penalties for the assault and battery of healthcare professionals on the job. It also allows hospitals to create their own police force, similar to a campus police force which protects colleges and universities.
Again, the Georgia Nurses Association offers our deepest condolences to the affected families, and we will continue our efforts to help ensure all nurses and healthcare workers are safe in their workplace.

I think we need to focus on appropriate treatment and assist those with mental health issues.
